In accordance with Resolution 7 of the Ninth District 12 Conference, the Philip Murray Memorial Scholarships will be available to the outstanding sons and daughters of active United Steelworker members in District 12. Please note: Retirees are considered honorary members and are, therefore, not eligible. Each scholarship for $1,500.00 is to be applied to the expenses of the freshman year at any accredited college offering courses leading to a four-year degree. District 12 top volunteer Xochitl Cobarruvias has built a strong relationship with the communities of Carson and southern Los Angeles through her tireless efforts bringing money, food, school supplies, and legal help to struggling people. She started a monthly food bank at her local’s Maywood office which has distributed more than ten-thousand bags of groceries to people in need. Because of her, 2,000 families were able to have a Thanksgiving meal and 500 kids received backpacks with school supplies last year. She raised over $7,500 for families involved in the area sports program to buy uniforms and cover fees, and she is a great help to her local’s annual “Children’s Christmas Party,” which provides hundreds of gifts to underprivileged kids.
