The house will vote on the #PROAct next week – WE NEED CALLS, EMAILS, TWEETS to push our legislators to pass one of the most transformative, worker-centric pieces of legislation since the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). Because of your hard work, we currently have 209 Reps signed on in the House. In the Senate, the bill has 41 original cosponsors. That list is growing too. We can’t stop now!

USW NextGen Breaking down how we can grow the union with legislation

The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act is comprehensive legislation that will protect our right to stand together and bargain for fairer wages, better benefits and safer workplaces.

NextGen is partnering with Rapid Response to host a one-hour virtual and interactive webinar on Wed., Feb. 24, that will break down the PRO Act and give you ways to get involved to ensure it succeeds.

2021 USW Philip Murray Memorial Scholarship - District 12

One scholarship, each with a value of $1,500.00, is to be made available for use during recipients’ first year at any accredited college, university, vocational or technical institution in the United States or Canada. Scholarships will be awarded in May 2021 by the Existence and Educational Council Fund, USW District 12, as determined by a selection committee comprised of professional educators.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE:

  1. Children, stepchildren, or legal wards of active members of local unions affiliated with the Existence and Educational Council Fund, United Steelworkers, District 12;

  2. Must have a 2.75 GPA or better during junior or senior year in high school; and,

  3. Graduate from high school in 2021.

The Philip Murray Memorial Scholarship does not discriminate based on sex, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, race, religion (including non-belief), political affiliation and intended course of study.

Available 2021 Phillip Murray Memorial Scholarships:

  •   California (Sub-District 1): 17 Awards

  •   Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah (Sub-District 2): 5 Awards

  •   Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, Washington and Idaho (Sub-District 3): 5 Awards

    HOW TO APPLY:

  1. Applicants must fill out the attached application form and secure the signature of the member’s local union financial secretary to indicate active union membership and applicant relationship eligibility;

  2. Prepare a short (300-500 words) essay outlining “What effect does a strong labor movement have on the working class in a democratic society?”; and,

  3. Mail the completed application, essay and high school transcript, postmarked by April 15, 2021, to The Scholarship Committee, United Steelworkers District 12, to the respective address below:

CONDITIONS OF THE AWARD: Recipients of the 2021 Philip Murray Memorial Scholarships will have arrangements made for the payment of their first year’s tuition, fees and books up to a maximum of $1,500 with the official of the institution charged with administration of scholarships. The Scholarship payment will be made when a copy of the recipient’s acceptance letter from the learning institution is presented to United Steelworkers. Should the recipient fail to send the requested information and acceptance letter from the learning institution by December 31, 2021, the award will be invalid. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.
