Local 9450 keeps cooking up support for Michigan health care members

On Wednesday, May 26, USW Local 4950 continued its commitment to the members they represent in the health care sector by serving a hot dog luncheon.

Earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic, the local had meals delivered from local restaurants in an ongoing plan to support not only its members who work in health care, but their surrounding communities as well.

Local 4950 is an amalgamated union that represents a diverse group of workers in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at the Empire Mine, Eastwood Nursing Center, Bell Medical Center, Ishpeming Medical Center, Negaunee Public Schools and Malton Electric.

USW Calls for, Wins Greater Accountability on ExxonMobil Lobbying

The United Steelworkers (USW) said that ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) shareholders yesterday approved a resolution introduced by the USW and seven co-filers calling for the company to disclose which organizations it supports for lobbying efforts, a necessary step in providing greater worker safety and corporate accountability.

“Shareholders face a dark money blind spot when the company fails to disclose its trade association payments used for lobbying, especially when these lobbying efforts contradict with ExxonMobil’s public position,” said Ricky Brooks, a member of USW Local 13-2001 who introduced the resolution. “Disclosure of the company’s payments to trade associations and social welfare groups that influence public policies will allow shareholders to assess the company’s management of risks.”

Pledge your solidarity with Locked-Out Steelworkers at ExxonMobil

Over the past year, ExxonMobil was perfectly willing to tell our Steelworker siblings at Local 13-243 they were essential as they worked through the COVID-19 pandemic, hurricanes, floods and an unprecedented freeze.

Now, ExxonMobil is rewarding that hard work and sacrifice by forcing them off their jobs.

On May 1, the company locked out more than 650 Steelworkers at their Beaumont, Texas refinery and their blending and packaging plant to force the workers to accept a proposal which included major changes impacting members’ safety, security and seniority.

It’s deeply disappointing that ExxonMobil would take such a drastic step and keep its dedicated workforce off the job when our only goal throughout this whole process has been to bargain a fair agreement.

Our brothers and sisters deserve to stay safe on the job. Having skilled, experienced workers operating the facility keeps communities safe.

Sign our pledge to join us in urging the company to end its unfair labor practice lock out immediately and come back to the bargaining table so the two sides could continue negotiating.
