We oppose the misleadingly-titled “Working Families Flexibility Act” (S. 801/H.R. 1180), which replaces our guaranteed overtime wages with a new “comp time” alternative. For nearly 80 years, the Fair Labor Standards Act has discouraged employers from overworking employees by making it more expensive for them to do so. This corporate-backed comp time legislation removes that protection. Under this bill, employers get the power to decide when comp time can be taken, while employees are likely to receive less pay and even more unpredictable schedules. There are ways to make our workplaces more flexible and family-friendly. This is not one of them.
